Joycenuwa

My practice uses art as a space for social reflection, empathy and dialogue. Working across painting, photography and digital mixed media, I explore identity, memory, cultural heritage, emotional wellbeing, human connection and our relationship with the natural world.

Through colour, symbolism and visual storytelling, I reflect on social and emotional experiences that are often difficult to express or overlooked, emotional wellbeing, cultural expectations, inequality, care and resilience to our collective responsibility for the environment. My work considers not only the beauty and abundance of the natural world, but also what may be lost when it is neglected or taken for granted.

For me, art is a way of questioning, witnessing and connecting. I want my work to encourage reflection, create empathy and contribute to conversations about how we care for ourselves, one another and the world we share.

With a background in Data Science, I also explore the relationship between people and technology, including how artificial intelligence, data and digital systems influence identity, communication and contemporary life. This perspective informs my experimentation with digital processes and new forms of visual storytelling.

My creative journey began in fashion, where I established Joycenuwa and presented work through platforms including the Nigerian Television Fashion Show, St Ives West African Fashion Show and Lagos Fashion and Design Week Fashion Focus selection process. Fashion remains part of my multidisciplinary practice, connecting storytelling with colour, form and craftsmanship.
